The challenge that the project addresses
This project addresses SDGs 1;2;3;4 and 5. Every year, thousands of children in rural areas in Zimbabwe are unable to complete basic primary school education. This is mainly attributed to the astronomical levels of poverty prevalent amongst rural communities in Zimbabwe. The decline of the Zimbabwean economy has resulted in children from low-income homes going to school with little to no food to eat,no school fees and the constant reality of sub-standard educational facilities. This project seeks to safeguard the childrens’ basic rights to basic quality education, equality, access to health, human dignity and life. Mudiwa Foundation believes in educating every child and empowering communities as a tool in combating poverty in Africa.
What is your project doing to respond to this challenge?
Child welfare youth and community development projects.
The proposed greenhouse and poultry project will address financial and nutritional challenges in a number of ways. The greenhouse project will complement the Zimbabwean Government’s efforts in ending child hunger by providing vegetables as relish for the maize meal that the government gives to rural schools. The surplus from the greenhouse project will be sold, thus ensuring that parents have access to predictable financial avenues. By so doing, this ensures that the parents are able to pay fees for their children. The poultry project aims at creating a revolving fund for the school aimed at buying textbooks and sanitary pads for the girls who often miss school during their menstrual cycles.
Describe the project's impact
The project has since been able to establish the mentoring groups within schools, and to conduct several workshops with the community on community development projects which can help assist community development with sustainability.
The proposed greenhouse project ensures nutrition for the students and financial stability for the community members involved in the project. In the first instance, the project stands to benefit 350 students at Manyoshwa Primary school in Mashonaland East Province in Zimbabwe. The daily feeding program ensures that children attend their classes on a full stomach, heightening their concentration and ultimately securing their academic success. The project further secures the rights of the child by providing predictable resources for the parents, allowing them to pay fees for their children. the revolving fund from the poultry project ensures that children have stationery and other necessaries.
