Biography
Professor Ramutsindela has received the NRF President’s Award, an appointment as Fellow of the Society of South African Geographers, and is an elected member of the Academy of
Science of South Africa. He is the recipient of the NRF Award for the Transformation of the Science Cohort. Prof Ramutsindela has researched and published widely on land reform in protected areas and trans-frontier conservation areas (also known as peace parks). His recent work is on the histories and present-day violence in conservation spaces. This work not only
challenges the ideology of conservation but also seeks to give voice to local people living inside or adjacent to conservation spaces. “What drew me to this study was the need to investigate the possibility for using the natural environment as a stepping stone towards creating conditions for peaceful co-existence amongst the peoples of the region.”
His recent work is on the histories and present-day violence in conservation spaces, where he focuses on the nature and form of green violence and its impact on ordinary people. This work not only challenges the ideology of conservation but also seeks to give voice to local people living inside or adjacent to conservation spaces. His most recent book (co-edited with Frank Matose and Tafadzwa Mushonga) is The Violence of Conservation in Africa (2022).
