Biography

Mia Jansen van Rensburg is a medical anthropologist from South Africa, currently pursuing a PhD at the University of Johannesburg. Her work is inspired by the medical professionals near and dear to her: Their resilience within South Africa’s embattled healthcare system is an abiding source of both hope for the future of healthcare in this country, and concern for the wellbeing of those who provide it. In her doctoral research, she attempts to make sense of an essential but poorly understood occupational group: emergency medical services personnel. Ultimately, she hopes to make a contribution both to the improvement of healthcare providers’ working conditions, and to the realisation of health justice for under-served communities.
