Biography
Janet Solomon, an environmental activist, artist, and award-winning filmmaker, is a PhD research fellow in the Emancipatory Futures Studies Programme at the University of the Witwatersrand. Solomon’s interdisciplinary, experimental research adopts a decolonial, eco-feminist documentary praxis, mobilising public action and forging accountability. Working with Affected Parties of South African offshore oil and gas applications and the sciences, Solomon explores ocean-centered alternatives to the state’s petro-imaginary. Her work examines how this praxis can produce resistant counter-imaginaries to capitalist extractivism, fostering new ways to envision relationships with oceans and challenging dominant narratives of resource exploitation.
