Equal Education

Equal Education is a movement of learners, parents, teachers and community members working for quality and equality in South African education, through analysis and activism. Equal Education’s strong research work has informed high-profile national campaigns on issues including school infrastructure and sanitation, and their Law Centre has engaged in pioneering public interest litigation to secure the right to basic education in South Africa.

Canon Collins Trust invests in the growth and leadership of Equal Education in a number of ways. We are collaborating with the EE team in the Eastern Cape to monitor the implementation of the new Norms and Standards in School Infrastructure. This historic document, released in November 2013 after a long campaign by Equal Education and others, sets down in law for the first time the government’s promise to provide water, sanitation facilities, electricity and other aspects of basic infrastructure in South Africa’s schools. With support from Comic Relief, Canon Collins and Equal Education are working closely to build community capacity to monitor the roll-out of these school improvements.

In addition, the Trust supports EE’s youth organisers through offering leadership training programmes in Gauteng and the Eastern Cape.
