The annual Change-Maker’s Awards shape and encourage scholars and alumni to impact southern Africa through social investment projects. Dr Patrick Tom was the first winner of the first Change-Maker Award for his 2016 project to improve Kauzhumba’s infrastructure.

In the remote Zambezi Valley, lies Kauzhumba Primary School. Its 500 pupils face the threat of dangerous wildlife roaming in the area as they study in a school with no formal buildings, no toilets and no clean water. Yet, unfailingly the children attend every day. With his prize money Dr Tom purchase a mobile library for the school. But what should have taken 18 hours by road from Johannesburg, South Africa, has taken nearly four years. One red tape hurdle after another was placed before the project at the border. Until today.
